When to go

The best time to surf Margaret River, Western Australia is pretty much all year long. Ground swells are consistently pushing decent waves on the coast throughout the year. However, in winter, waves will be bigger than summer and one should expect colder water temperature. The summer months will also be a little more crowded.

Getting there

Margaret river is located 3 hours south of Perth, the biggest city in Western Australia. Hire a car or use public transportation to get to Margaret. The first option is probably better as it will allow you the freedom to “surf check” the whole coast without any restriction.

 

 

Safety/things to know

-Watch out for sharks
-If you are a beginner, contacting a surf school is probably the best option as you don’t want to find yourself at the wrong spot.

Margaret River’s most popular break is Surfers point. It offers a left as well as a right and works on any swell size. It is very consistent throughout the year and tends to get crowded on good days.

The Box

Suitable for experts only, this heavy slab is one of Margaret River’s most intense wave. A hollow right-hander breaking over a shallow reef. No room for mistake, but the reward is massive…

Yallingup

Located a bit up the coast, Yallingup is a nice area with multiple different breaks for all skill levels. It is pretty consitent throughout the year but obviously better in winter. There are a few reef breaks and also some sandbars.

A very consistent beach break working for all skill levels and at any time of the year on a SW swell. Will get offshore wind from the east and produces nice waves in both directions.
